Broadband via power lines to be offered in Onondaga
National Grid and a Syracuse company announced
an agreement Thursday that will provide for a high-speed
broadband over-the-power-line connection in some
Syracuse suburbs.
New Visions Powerline Communications Inc. will
design, build and operate the BPL network, which
can provide homeowners and businesses Internet and
voice service. The company also plans to roll out
video service in the future.
The service will be delivered over existing electrical
lines simply by plugging a power line modem into
any electrical outlet. Service will be installed
initially in the towns of Geddes and Fairmount,
and portions of Camillus.
The agreement, part of a filing with the state
Public Service Commission, could allow for the service
to be expanded to other parts of National Grid's
service territory, although company spokesman Alberto
Bianchetti said there are no plans to expand the
service beyond Onondaga County.
